Sustainable Fishing

We only source our fish from sustainable fishing sources because we want to play our part in securing the future of fish stocks across the globe. We understand the important role we play in sourcing fish from areas that carefully manage their fish stocks by listening to the Scientists and Marine Biologists who monitor the safety of stocks on a daily basis and not those individuals or governments who are only interested in pound notes. We only listen to hard facts and not hear say.

We have built a relationship over many years with the vessels that catch for us. They are as passionate about sustaining fish stocks as we are. This is why they adhere to the strict quota system in Iceland that is introduced by the scientists to ensure that they can continue to fish safely for many generations to come.

Fishy Fight

We have been watching the fishy fight programmes with Hugh Fearnley-Whittingstall with great interest over the last couple of days.

We fully support the messages in the programme and completely and totally agree that the level of discard enforced on fisherman by governmental laws is an absolute disgrace.

We only source our Cod, Haddock & Plaice from the sustainable waters of the Icelandic Coast where It is illegal to discard any fish that is caught by any Icelandic trawler. If an Icelandic vessel catches any species in excess of its fishing permit, the relevant fishing company has the option of obtaining additional quota within a certain period of time after landing the catch. Vessels are authorized to land a small percentage of the catch, usually by-catch, without the use of quota. The catch in question is sold at auction and the proceeds go to a research fund that supports marine research.

We have long advocated the sale of different species of fish and we have sold Pollack, Col ey , Hake and Red Cod (a white fish from New Zealand) providing they meet our criteria of being sourced from a sustainable source. We are currently sourcing a good quality alternative white fish for you to try and this will be in our shops within the next couple of weeks.

You can be safe in the knowledge however that all of the fish that we purchase has been sourced from sustainable sources and in recognition of that, we are the only fish & chip retailer in the UK to be awarded the Icelandic Responsible Fisheries Award by the Icelandic Ministry For Fisheries. If you would like to find out more please look at our Sustainable Fisheries tab on our website.

If you do have any questions with regards to this please contact me.
